BASIC WELDING

Training Description:
Basic training on safety of welding cylinders, general safety of welding, principles and applications of gas welding, torch cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding and many hours practice on flat, horizontal and vertical welding with 6011 and some 7018 electrodes.  The focus will be on the craft of welding done by Bricklayers.

Training Objectives:
Identify and explain all the safety in working with the oxyacetylene cylinders, regulators, torches and general common sense safety in dealing with gases in welding and cutting.

Identify welding terms in dealing with parts of the weld, (toes, legs, throat, root, face)
Identify different welding joints, (butt, lap, tee, corner, edge)

Explain the basics of the S.M.A.W. power source and basic electricity in dealing with A.C. and D.C. and polarity (Reverse & Straight).

Safety in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (electrical safety, Ultraviolet Arc radiation, eye, ear and clothing safety).

Dealing with distortion and stresses and strains in welding.

Identification of electrode designations in arc welding.

Students will spend many hours in the welding lab, welding on plates and learning to weld different joints and different positions to master the craft of welding on the job and also testing these welds to understand that they need to get proper fusion for the welds to hold under loading conditions.

Weld inspection and going over welding defects and how to correct any of these defects are going to be a focus in this class.
